The Thekkady
Tiger Trail
The Thekkady Tiger Trail, which was KTIL’s humble contribution to the eco-tourism landscape of God’s Own Country, brought the organisation numerous accolades worldwide. This unique package, offering a hideaway far from the madding crowd, was conceived and introduced by Kerala Travels Interserve as an exceptional eco-tourism experience.
The 100% eco-oriented project successfully combined the thrill of trekking with the preservation of forests. It was nominated for several international awards and was selected as one of the world’s best-practice papers by PATA. The project also received the prestigious National Award of Excellence for the Best Eco-tourism Project in India on January 25, 2000. Additionally, the Government of Kerala conferred upon it the award for the Most Innovative Tourism Project in Kerala on March 30, 2000.
A Benchmark inEco-Tourism
Beyond recognition and awards, the Thekkady Tiger Trail stood as a model for responsible tourism, demonstrating how travel experiences could actively contribute to conservation and community development. The project promoted low-impact travel practices, limited visitor numbers, and prioritized environmental education, ensuring minimal disturbance to the fragile forest ecosystem. By engaging trained local guides and forest personnel, the initiative also supported sustainable livelihoods while fostering a deeper respect for wildlife and natural habitats.
Over the years, the Tiger Trail attracted nature enthusiasts, conservationists, and responsible travelers from around the world who sought authentic and meaningful encounters with the wilderness. More than an adventure, it represented KTIL’s long-term commitment to preserving Kerala’s natural heritage and positioning eco-tourism as a powerful tool for conservation, awareness, and sustainable growth.
Through its thoughtful design and sustained commitment to sustainability, the Thekkady Tiger Trail inspired responsible tourism models and reinforced KTIL’s dedication to blending travel, conservation, and community development into a single, impactful experience.
