Lullaby@Varkala

The path-breaking project Lullaby@Varkala was conceived by KTIL and implemented in association with ICDS Varkala, Prochild (an NGO based in Varkala constituted for implementing the project), and above all, with the people of Varkala. The project was the first of its kind in India and emerged as a unique model for socially relevant tourism initiatives.

The project aimed at the social and economic empowerment of the people of Varkala through the powerful tool of tourism, seeking to create a society that was self-sufficient, aware, and empowered. “Tourism with a human touch” formed the core theme, taking tourism and community development beyond tomorrow. The initiative was implemented in phases through various programmes that ensured the meaningful engagement of all sections of society and visiting tourists, including the supply of nutrition to children, organic and community farming, handicraft and embroidery production and sales, interactive sessions, and tourism-friendly initiatives.

As part of the Lullaby@Varkala project, the inauguration of a new Anganwadi building in Edava Panchayat was held on 5th March 2012 at 4:30 PM. The new building served as a learning space for 20 young children aged between three and five years. In keeping with the project’s philosophy, the inauguration was conducted as a solemn function involving the beneficiaries and the local community. This marked the seventh Anganwadi building constructed over the previous four and a half years. Infrastructure upgradation of two additional Anganwadis in Elakamon Panchayat was also underway at that time.

Socially responsible tourism

What drives Lullaby @Varkala?

For most of us, tourism is just an elitist activity that does not involve or benefit the community living in a tourist hot spot. Does tourism have a social responsibility? Can tourism be utilized as a vehicle for greater social awareness among the people?
Lullaby@Varkala is a, pioneering project that answers these pertinent questions. By facilitating
interaction between tourists and locals and by channelling the wealth of tourism for the uplifting of children, women and economically weaker sections of society. Lullaby seeks to create a symbiotic relationship between tourism and the populace.
